As the weather map is indicating, another polar vortex front is headed our way. This blast of Arctic air could bring Virginia a dump of fresh snow on the ground. Snow shoveling can cause back pain and injury, if not executed properly. It’s important to follow these tips that will help you minimize the risk to your back.

  1. Warm Up With More Than A Hat
Get your muscles ready for the work they will be doing. Warm up for five to ten minutes before shoveling (actually, we recommend this before any strenuous activity). Get the blood moving by walking in place or going for a brisk walk (be careful on the snow!). Then do recommended stretches for your lower back, hamstrings, and arms.
  2. Use the Right Shovel
Many shovels these days are equipped with an adjustable handle length. This allows you to reduce the arch in your back, while keeping the shovel blade on the ground. Also consider purchasing a shovel that is lightweight to reduce the total weight that you are moving. If snow is icy, it can get heavy quickly.
  3. Use the Right Lifting Techniques
If you can, push the snow to the side rather than lifting it. If lifting is required, remember to always face towards the object you are lifting with your shoulders, head, and hips. Avoid twisting your back as you move the snow and instead pivot your whole body to the new location. Don’t extend your arms to throw the snow. Walk to the new location instead and deposit the snow gingerly. Slow and steady will help you avoid back pain.
