As the “physician’s champion” for the American Orthopaedic Association’s “Own the Bone” program, Dr. James Leipzig will give a presentation about the health implications of fragility fractures on Thursday morning, October 6, 2016 at LewisGale Medical Center’s Education Center Auditorium. Dr. Leipzig’s talk will also address the Own The Bone program in southwest Virginia and how it has been implemented at LewisGale Medical Center and through the efforts of Virginia Spine Care.
Own the Bone is a national post-fracture, fragility fracture prevention initiative overseen by the American Orthopaedic Association. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to improve doctor and patient behavior so that the occurrence of future fractures is reduced. The program also has a positive impact on medical care for osteoporosis.
LewisGale Medical Center and Virginia Spine Care have embraced Own the Bone to make sure that fracture patients receive comprehensive medical care for their injuries. Own the Bone offers ten prevention measures and the tools necessary for health care facilities to create a liaison service and prevention program for fracture sufferers, including the multi-faceted approach that LewisGale Medical Center provides to ensure optimal orthopedic care in Salem and the greater Roanoke Valley.
