National Scoliosis Awareness Month takes place every year in June, with the goal of stressing that early detection is key to help sufferers avoid a lifetime of pain and complications. The campaign also unites scoliosis patients, families, and physicians in a collaborative community of support.
Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person’s spine is curved from side to side. Recent scoliosis data shows that:
-Scoliosis affects 2-3% of the American population (7 million people).
-It is the most common spinal deformity in the United States.
-Scoliosis can affect anyone, regardless of race, age, or socio-economic class.
-The condition usually starts between the ages of 10-15.
-In 85% of the cases, there is no identifiable cause.
It is important to catch the beginning of scoliosis in children and teenagers to ensure options for treating the curvature of the spine and slowing (or even stopping) the progression of the condition. Since children’s bones are still growing and are not fully hardened, non-surgical treatments, like bracing, are an option. Be sure to schedule a scoliosis screening for your child if one is not performed at their school.
