October 16th is World Spine Day! World Spine Day seeks to promote preventative practices and raise awareness about spinal health and spinal disorders.
This year’s World Spine Day motto, “Straighten Up and Move,” highlights the important roles that proper posture and daily activity play in maintaining a healthy spine.
Here are three ways you can start improving your spine health today.
- Exercise Daily
Starting a daily exercise routine will not only make you feel better, but it can also help accelerate your spine recovery. When you exercise, blood flows throughout the body and carries nutrients to the disc space and soft tissue within the spine. Try starting with a low-impact activity such as walking or swimming.
- Be Mindful of Your PostureSitting with bad posture can cause a great deal of back pain. In fact, it puts three times more pressure on your spine than standing does! When you sit, make sure to sit up straight with your shoulders loose, and always remember to take standing breaks to help keep your spine loose.
- Sleep WellThe way you sleep is another significant contributor to your spine health. It is important to keep your spine in a neutral position, and keep your weight distributed evenly. Try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees, and using a supportive pillow that will keep your neck aligned with your spine.
Dr. Leipzig and the staff at Virginia Spine Care wish you a happy and healthy World Spine Day!
