Virginia spine surgeon Dr. James Leipzig, was recently interviewed by local news station, WZBJ24, on the topic of diagnosing back pain and the ways to treat it. In the interview, which you can watch in full below, Dr. Leipzig states that 70% of people will have a severe episode of back pain in their lifetime. Perhaps even more interesting is the fact that in 85% of those cases, the tests (MRIs, X-rays, etc.) come back normal. In other words, we don’t really know what causes the pain.
While a normal test result may be relieving as it indicates there is no serious issue like a tumor, fracture, or herniated disc, non-specific back pain can be extremely frustrating.
