On Monday, March 27, Virginia Spine Care’s Dr. James Leipzig participated in Own the Bone’s “Experts on the Line” group call and discussion. Attendees asked Dr. Leipzig and Lynette Judy from Jefferson Hospital questions about Own the Bone, how to implement it at their own hospitals and clinics, and potential issues and how to solve them. Specific questions could be submitted beforehand during registration or asked during the event, time permitting. Past subjects have focused on introducing Own the Bone to patients, educating them about their bone health and finding the best staff for the program.
The American Orthopaedic Association’s Own the Bone program is a fragility fracture prevention initiative. Around 80% of patients who are treated for fractures suffer from osteoporosis but don’t receive the necessary care, leaving them at risk for future fractures. Up to 25% of patients who fracture their hips die within a year, while others may suffer loss of mobility and independence, and need professional care. Own the Bone aims to prevent this by transforming the way hospitals treat and educate fracture patients. By teaching patients about taking active steps to improve their bone health, they can decrease the possibility of future injuries and improve quality of life.
Launched in 2009, Own the Bone is now nationwide and has been at LewisGale Medical Center since 2016. Dr. Leipzig is LewisGale’s “Physician’s Champion,” working with the staff to find new ways to help physicians interact with patients and reduce fractures caused by osteoporosis.
The webinar occurred from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm EDT and was open to Own the Bone subscribers. “Experts on the Line” is a bimonthly event.
