Degenerative spinal disorders are common disorders, often associated with aging. Degeneration may cause disc herniation, pressure on the spinal cord, stenosis, or osteoarthritis. Other conditions, such as infection, arthritis, or even muscle strains can also effect the normal function of your spine.
The discs between the bones of your spine consist of cartilage, fibrous tissue, and water. As we age, these discs can weaken and flatten, bulge, break down, or herniate. Herniation occurs when the fibrous portion of a disc weakens and the disc nucleus pushes out, putting pressure on nearby nerves.
Narrowing of the spinal canal, known as stenosis, is a potentially more serious condition. If the spinal nerves are significantly compressed or irritated, serious, radiating back pain may occur.
