Cervical discs are the cushions or shock absorbers that reside between the vertebra of the cervical spine. When a cervical disc has become too damaged or degenerated to function properly, there is an alternative to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion surgery. Cervical disc replacement is a relatively new procedure that involves removing the diseased or damaged cervical disc and replacing it with an artificial cervical disc device.
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, “Disk replacement surgery may have the advantage of allowing more movement and creating less stress on your remaining vertebrae than traditional cervical disk surgery.” Read more.
Whether or not a cervical disc replacement is appropriate may depend on how much the disc has degenerated. If you feel you are a candidate for cervical disc replacement, we recommend you discuss your condition with Dr. James Leipzig at Virginia Spine Care. Ask your doctor for a referral to Dr. Leipzig.
