Neck pain is one of the most common complaints patients have when they visit the doctor. Neck muscles can be strained in a variety of ways, whether it’s sitting improperly at your desk or hunching as you walk. Your spine and back are a highly connected system and neck discomfort can also result from muscular tightness in the upper back or pinching of the nerves around your vertebrae.

Neck pain can cause disruption in your sleep patterns and day-to-day activities. While treatment may vary depending on the cause of the discomfort, these tips can help protect you from developing neck pain:

  1. Sleep on your BackSleeping on your back is the best way to let your entire spine rest comfortable, while still providing support to your head. If you sleep better on your side or stomach, make sure that your pillow is not too high. A good estimate is 4-6 inches tall.
  2. Computer Screen At Eye LevelTry this out: Sit down at you computer chair comfortably and close your eyes. When you open them, your gaze should fall in the middle of your screen. If not, try adjusting your chair or using books to raise your monitor.
  3. Use a Telephone HeadsetFree up your hands and avoid holding your head awkwardly to one side with a hands-free headset while you make phone calls.
  4. Carry Weight EvenlyDon’t make the common mistake of always carrying a purse or briefcase on the same side of your body. This causes the shoulders to become uneven over time, straining the muscles, and potentially causing pain. Consider using a back pack instead to evenly distribute weight across your shoulders.

You can’t prevent neck pain from ever occurring, but we hope these tips and reminders will help you stay as healthy as possible. If you experience consistent or severe neck pain that requires the attention of a spine specialist in Roanoke or Lexington, please call Dr. Leipzig at 540-725-9770 or ask your physician for a referral to Virginia Spine Care.
